Copper Prices |
Copper prices are expected to rise following the earthquake in Chile on 27th February. The earthquake which reached a magnitude of 8.8 stopped production in a 5th of Chile's copper mines. The knock-on effects of the earthquake have caused uncertainty in the copper market increasing the price by $400.00/tonne within a week. Estimates suggest the LME copper price will carry on increasing with copper trading between $8000 and $10,000/tonne in the near future. |

KNX Cable Approval
KNX has replaced EIB (European Installation Bus) EHSA and Batibus as the new European building management system of choice. Meeting IEC/ISO 14543 the system has been widely adopted around the world for its energy saving features and "green" credentials. FSC Global's KNX certified bus cable is a two pair 0.80mm conductor design with an overall foil screen and LSHF sheath in green marked with the KNX logo. The Low Smoke Halogen Free design makes it the ideal choice for building management systems in public environments. The certification process by KNX ensures the cables compatibility with KNX equipment and gives the installer piece of mind that the cable will work. So if your specifying or buying KNX cable always check that it's certified by KNX. A cheaper version could be a costly mistake! PAS 5308The BCA - The British Cables Association and ECA are working to develop PAS 5308 (Publically Available Specification - 5308) to ensure that the technical information in BS5308 remains public viewing following the withdrawal of BS 5308 and its replacement by EN 50288-7. PAS 5308 will retain the technical content of both parts of BS 5308: 1986, covering polyethylene insulated (part 1) and PVC insulated (part 2) instrumentation cables. Like BS5308, PAS 5308 will be in two parts - PVC insulated cables and polyethylene insulated cables - and specifies the requirements for and dimensions of insulated instrumentation cables in pair constructions, with or without screens, and optionally incorporating single wire armour and, for polyethylene cables, a lead sheath option. PAS 5308 is widely expected to include additional and revised content from the original BS 5308 standard to facilitate for voltage ratings above that specified in replacement standard EN 50288-7. The "standard" is due to be released in August 2009 and will be available from the British Standards Institute (BSI) The demand for traditional BS 5308 cables is huge and will continue for many years to come. It's simply to labour intensive and expensive for large organizations to change or their existing drawings so we will continue stocking BS 5308 for some years to come. We are also introducing EN 50288-7 standard cables to meet the needs of new projects and I guess when PAS 5308 takes off we will be stocking those too! |

October 2007 - KIOGE |
For the second year running our export division FSC Global exhibited at the KIOGE 2007 oil and gas show in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Daniel Butterfield spoke to Wired about his experiences at the show, including a brush with royalty. “It was great to be back” said Daniel. “It’s been a busy year for us and it seems like only yesterday we were last here.” Since FSC Global last exhibited in 2006 the show has grown significantly, with more visitors and the addition of a new pavilion. |
“We were one of 578 exhibitors. Many of the companies we recognised from last year but there were also a lot of new faces – 120 companies were exhibiting for the first time. The way the show has expanded in size really reflects this changing and dynamic oil and gas market, as well as the development of Kazakhstan itself.” The key products FSC Global supplies to this industry are oil, gas and marine cables but there is great demand for high-spec products in Low Smoke Halogen Free types, often with fire resistant or hydrocarbon resistant properties. Such are the demands of the industry, many of the products supplied are now bespoke. “That’s very much the way the market is changing and we are starting to define ourselves as more of a service provider than a product provider. Customers are looking for us to provide solutions. |
Prince Andrew, Duke of York paid a visit to the stand in his role as the UK’s special representative for trade and investment. He came to outline his long-term strategy for technological assistance between the UK and Kazakhstan.
“His presence certainly created a buzz around the place and it bodes well for future relations and trade between the two countries” said Daniel. “Kazakhstan is a key market for us” he added. “Its experience and competence in extraction, not only from its own oil and gas fields but also from the north sea is seeing it push towards being one of the top 10 oil producing countries in the world.” “As always the show was a great opportunity to meet customers face to face, old and new, to discuss their requirements and ways in which we can better meet their needs.” |
