Mater Dei Hospital, Malta

The Mater Dei Hospital was built by the Maltese Government to provide up to the minute medical treatment with the minimum of environmental impact, making it one of Europe's leading environmentally friendly hospitals. With a floor area of 232,000m2 and 8000 rooms energy saving is an intrinsic part of the architect's design. Building management systems were specified for the control of Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) along with lighting control and gas detection systems.

To meet the stringent hospital safety requirements all the cables required needed to be Low Smoke Halogen Free, flame retardant and offer specific data requirements for each Bus and control system. Suitable cables simply did not exist. FSC Global were invited to propose cable specifications that met the data and safety characteristics required whilst being cost effective and available on short manufacture times.

How did FSCG help?

FSC Global listened to the electrical contractors, system designers and equipment suppliers to understand each party’s needs. FSC Global proposed various design concepts, following discussions a range of bespoke electrical and optical cables were approved for each application. Strategic production facilities were selected to reduce transport time and environmental impact, in keeping with the Hospitals environmental policy and design.

Through a transparent Client/Vendor partnership the control systems were designed, manufactured and installed within the anticipated time frames, on budget with the minimum of environmental impact. FSC Global have been supplying cable to the Mater Dei Hospital project since 2002. To date 50,000m of armoured power cables and 400,000m of signal and data cabling has been installed to the highest safety standards.
